If you believe that you have been the victim of gender discrimination at work, you may want to sue to get some relief. However, there is a detailed process that you have to go through before you can sue. Each of these steps may give you the relief that you are looking for. If not, you are establishing more documentation for your case, and that can help you when it is time to go to court. One of those things is to go to the EEOC and file with them.

EEOC

This stands for Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. There is a federal EEOC, and your state should have an agency as well, which is usually called the EEOC as well. The EEOC is the agency that is designed to support federal and state anti-discrimination laws in the area of employment. They help to enforce the laws and investigate any charges brought against a business for violating them.

Documentation

The first step in handling your case is to prepare all of the documentation that you may have. The more documentation you have, the better off you are. There are several things that you can do for documentation. One of them is to create a log of everything that happens or is said to you. You should write everything down as soon as possible so that you have the best record possible. You will probably want to write that down in a notebook so that you can keep it with you and take it home. You don't want to leave the documentation on your work computer because that can be considered work product and could cause issues. You also want to take pictures of anything visual, like pictures or notes left in your workspace.

File Charges

Once you have all your documentation ready, it's time to go to the EEOC and file the charges. The first part of filing charges is to let your employer know that you are going to file. Then you will detail everything that has happened and what you expect to happen now. Make a copy of the notification letter and send it by registered mail so that there is a record that your employer has gotten the paperwork. Then you can go to the EEOC with all your documentation and start the process. There is paperwork that you are going to have to fill out, and then you will be interviewed by employees at the EEOC to get your basic info. After that, they are going to look at everything and let you know what they are ready to do.

Gender discrimination still happens a lot more than it should. If you think that you have a case, make sure that you start with going to the EEOC. For more information, reach out to a gender discrimination law office near you.
